Liquid crystals possess the unique property of existing in an intermediate state, that is in between liquid and solid. In liquids, molecules are swimming around at random, whereas liquid crystal molecules are aligned in crystal grids while still exhibiting properties of liquidity. This ability to flow like a liquid but maintain a regularly ordered structure is essential for their application in optical imaging.
Scientists at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) have developed a new type of liquid crystal. Their method requires a slow cooling which structures the liquid crystal molecules in a self-assembly process to create columns. A unique property of their crystal columns is their ability to conduct electrical energy along their whole length serving as organic power cables to provide targeted electrical transmissions. One of the greatest advantages of this new technology is that if a liquid crystalline power cable ruptures, it will heal on its own. Their results are published in Chemistry: A European Journal.
